Notes from the Designer:
Vatu Talei (pronounced Va-too Tal-a) in the Fijian language means jewel or precious stone. That is exactly what this shlanket showcases, which is Chandi's absolutely gorgeous Birthstones Collection in my favorite yarn base Crema Sock. This design is like opening your grandmother's jewelry box, where all the gems and precious stones she collected through the decades dazzle, as you remember the significance and story behind each one. It's truly a treasure.
Each one of us is assigned a gemstone at birth, our very own birthstone. Mine is Amethyst. What is yours? Your family collection? When you make your own Vatu Talei shlanket featuring all the gems in your family, you will have made a masterpiece that you will treasure for years to come, passing it down for generations just like grandmother's jewels.
- Click the Videos tab to watch a video demonstrating how to work the Flower Granny Square.
- The sample shown used approximately 2,900 yds/2,652 m total. Nearly all of the skein of each color is used, and three-quarters of the border/join color was used.
- Standing sc and standing dc are used throughout the pattern when starting the background color of the Flower Granny Squares and in other places, as indicated.
- When making the Flower Granny Square, Rnd 3 will form the petals. The placement of the first sc can be tricky. Pull the spine straight up, and at the base of the spine opposite the sc (on left side), you will see where the two threads cross. That is where your first stitch goes. Make sure you are going under both crossing strands. Another way is to look directly across from the sc on the left side of the petal spine. On the right side, there will be two crossing strands. This is where the stitches go, going up the right-side spine.
- Do not put ch spaces between 3 dc when working granny squares. Since there are no ch sp but the 3 dcs, when working the granny squares the instructions will simply note as “space” or sp.
- When joining granny squares together, always place them WS together, and always start in the upper right corner of the square.
- Joining the squares is most easily done at a table.
- When placing the beads on the border, the bead placement should correlate with the “space” inbetween each of the 3 dcs.
Happy crocheting!
