Intermediate: Perfect for crocheters who know how to work single crochet stitches and want to explore changing colors. Skills/concepts include working in back loops and two types of color changes.

Notes From the Designer:

Crochet a cowl with Fair Isle style using simple single crochet stitches and two contrasting colors. Worked in the round, this tubular cowl showcases both a checked design and a lattice design. Two solid bands feature subtle texture with every third row worked into back loops only. Learn two ways to change yarn colors, as you work the patterned bands.

• The Original Version used our Limited Edition Restore Fingering yarn (399 yds/365 m per 3.5 oz/ 100 g skein) and was made with one skein each of colors Mimic (Color A) and Beam (Color B).
• The Original Version used approximately 600 yds/550 m total: Color A) 250 yds/230 m and Color B) 350 yds/320 m.
• Color changes are worked differently in the checked bands and the lattice band; see the Special Stitches section for instructions on both styles of color changes.
• The sample was stitched with the unused color carried across the wrong side of the work rather than crocheting over the unused color. This created yarn "floats" similar to those in Fair Isle knitting.
• Consider using a yarn bowl (or bowls) and spinning it periodically to keep your working yarns from being stranded.
• Maintaining even tension, especially when changing colors, will keep your patterned bands looking their best.
• Checked Band 1, Lattice Band, and Checked Band 2 are all worked in single crochet. You may find the charts easier to follow for color placement, although color changes are also listed in the written directions.
• Rounds are worked in a continuous spiral rather than joined at the end of each round.
• Due to the spiraling nature of construction, the Lattice Band pattern will not match perfectly at the beginning and end of rounds.
• The stitch count remains constant throughout with 156 stitches each round.
