Notes from the Designer:

Get ready to wrap yourself in elegant flowers with this design inspired by Sir J.R.R. Tolkien’s Queen of Flowers Vána. I am a big fan of his work, so I always tend to take inspiration from his books. This time it was The Silmarillion.

Vána was the younger sister of Yavanna, the Queen of the Earth, and the wife of Oromë, the Huntsman of the Valar. In her dwelling, she had gardens filled with golden flowers and had influence with the flora and fauna of Middle-Earth. She was associated with flowers. Inspired by her gardens, the Vána wrap features floral granny squares and a floral panel with a look resembling a panel of embossed flowers.

  • Approximately 1,536 yds/1,405 m (three skeins of MC and one skein of CC each having yardage of 384 yds/351 m per 100g/3.5 oz) were used for the sample.
  • Gauge is not crucial but could affect overall size and yardage.
  • When introducing the CC, work previous dc as: yo, insert hook into st, yo and pull up a lp, yo, pull through 2 lps, yo with CC, pull through remaining 2 lps.
  • Carry the unused color loosely behind the working row in central panel.
  • The length of the shawl can be adjusted by changing the numbers of pattern repeats in the central panel. One repeat measures around 6’’/15 cm.
  • The pattern is worked in panels. The central panel is worked in rows, while the side panels are made by joining three squares sideways.
  • Use a stitch marker to keep track of first and last stitch. PM in highlighted dc for every repeat.
  • The designer has underlined stitches to be skipped and stitches not to be skipped throughout the pattern.
