Notes from the Designer:

The colors in the Rusted Hues kit are reminiscent of the gorgeous, stratified rocks that comprise much of the tableland in the Southwestern United States. I first saw them as a young teenager on a family road trip from Alabama to California. We all marveled at the changing landscapes as we traveled, so different from the low, green hills around our home. My Scottish granny was particularly amazed at the vast diversity of all the states we visited. She was an avid knitter who enjoyed projects with cables, so I incorporated an all-over cable pattern into this blanket in her memory. It looks intricate, but each of the three types of cable stitches cover just four stitches at a time, making it easy to break down the steps along the way. A chart of the cable pattern is included, along with full written instructions.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a video showing how to work the cables featured in this pattern.
  • Gauge is not crucial to this project, but will affect yardage and size.
  • The sample shown here used almost every inch of each skein, so you will need to reclaim any yardage used for a gauge swatch.
  • The pattern uses six colors, but can be made with fewer or more if preferred.
  • After you have made your gauge swatch, if you are concerned about running out of yarn, you can always decrease your needle size to help ensure you do not run out of yarn, but this may affect your project’s dimensions.
  • For a wider blanket, cast on additional stitches in multiples of 16. For a longer blanket, repeat Rows 1-16 of the Body section to achieve the desired length. Be sure to purchase enough yarn to accommodate increased sizes.
  • To blend color transitions, consider alternating the new color every two rows as you reach the end of each working color. Only change colors at the end of a row to avoid any weak joins within the body of the blanket.
