NEEDLES: 

US #5 (3.75 mm) 32” (80cm) circular needles 

US #4 (3.5 mm) 24” (60cm) circular needles (for neckband) 

US #5 (3.75 mm) set of double pointed needles for sleeves

SKILL LEVEL: 

Advanced: For the adventurous knitter who loves to tackle something a bit more complicated. Skills/concepts include: stranded colorwork knitting, garment construction, knitting both flat and in the round, reading charts, and completing a three-needle bind off. Previous experience with stranded colorwork knitting (Fair Isle) is recommended. Previous experience with dpns is helpful, as the sleeves are worked in the round on dpns. 

Notes from the Designer:

Without a doubt, the colors of the Mysa Hues Pearlescent Fingering yarn kit spoke to me the moment that I first saw them. I just knew that I needed to create something with them. This Fair Isle pattern allows the colors to play off of one another, while the hand-dyed nature of the yarns gives the sweater a vintage feel. Its boxy fit and the softness of the yarn makes Solace a joy to wear. 

Knit from the bottom up, the bulk of the Fair Isle design is knit first. The upper front and back of the sweater are divided at the underarms and knit separately before being joined at the shoulders with a three-needle bind off. Stitches are picked up to knit the sleeves in the round. The final step is to pick up and knit the neckband. No further seaming is required.

• Making a gauge swatch is critical to achieve the desired results. I used to think that I “always knit on gauge.” However, it finally dawned on me that what I was really assuming was that I knit to the same gauge as the person who designed the pattern. Believe me, that is a bad assumption. Please do not assume that you knit to the same gauge as I do! Yes, making a gauge swatch is an extra step, but it also assures you that what you are knitting will produce what you expect. And you won’t need to worry about running out of yarn. If you are substituting yarn, it is especially important to verify that your yarn behaves in the same way as the yarn called for in the pattern.
• Be sure to also check your gauge using the colorwork chart. Most knitters will have a tighter gauge in colorwork. If you have a large difference between your single-color Stockinette gauge and your colorwork gauge, consider going up in needle size when working the colorwork in order to match the gauge of your single-color Stockinette swatch. Note that the Fair Isle portion of the sweater should fall around your ribcage to your waist, and this should also be taken into consideration. If your gauge in the colorwork section is slightly tighter, this will add a little bit of shaping at the waist, which may (or may not) be desirable.
• Providing instructions for so many sizes can make the pattern seem a little overwhelming. Go through the pattern, and circle or highlight stitch counts that pertain to your size. Where different instructions are given for specific sizes, mark those that apply. You may wish to “x” out those that do not apply if that makes things clearer for you.
• The sweater is knit somewhat loosely. Be aware that the size of the neck opening shown in the schematic will grow by approximately 1 1/2” when using this yarn.
• This sweater is knit from the bottom up. To make the split hem, both front and back will be worked flat separately, then joined, and the sweater will be continued in the round. Additional rows may be added to lengthen the sweater.
