Notes from the Designer:

Quintalessence is a journey in color—the quintessential exploration of mixing color and stitch patterns to create a unique work of warmth and art. With three distinct sections and the ability to use as many colors as you wish, the customization possibilities are completely limitless.

Explore mixing and matching in ways you had never dared to explore before. Use five colors in sets of two with a separation color or six to divide your separating stripes between two colors. Or stash dive, and use as many colors as you have laying around just waiting to be knit up into something glorious.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a video tutorial demonstrating how to work the stitches, while making a mini version of this shawl.
  • The sample shown used approximately 1,340 yds/1,225 m total: Color A: 240 yds/219 m, Color B: 240 yds/219 m, Color C: 180 yds/165 m, Color D: 220 yds/201 m, Color E: 220 yds/201 m, and Color F: 240 yds/219 m.
  • This pattern is broken into four repeating sections. The instructions have been written such that each section can be worked without regard to number of stitches, as every RS row sees a one-stitch increase. Within Sections 1 and 3 are additional instructions to help you navigate the variations in stitch counts without needing to write out separate instructions across every section with its stitch count variations.
  • Section 1 is a checkerboard colorwork section, with the color changing every stitch AND the opposite color of the stitch below. Take care to not work this section too tightly to prevent the fabric from being able to lay flat. It may do you well to work a small swatch first to work out any tension issues before you begin the shawl. This is the only section that uses two colors at a time.
  • When increasing in Section 1, the stitch is M1L. To work a M1L, pick up the bar between the stitches on your needles from front to back, and place on your project needle. Then knit through the back loop with your working needle to twist the stitch and close the hole created by making the stitch. If you knit through the front loop (like a regular knit stitch), it will look like an eyelet instead.
  • Section 2 is a garter stitch separation stripe.
  • You will begin Section 3 on the WS of the shawl. If you do not begin on the WS, the striping will look very different. If you wish to try it anyway, just work one extra row in Section 2 before beginning. This will change your yardage requirements quite significantly, but there should be enough to manage. If you do this, you will also need to work an extra row in Section 4, too.
  • Section 4 is another garter stitch separation stripe and can be worked in the same color or a different color than Section 2.
