Notes from the Designer:

Pranayama is a yoga breathing technique that’s also known as the breath of life. Your breath fuels your body, and focused deep breathing helps to calm the mind and nervous system. I created this simple lace shawl as a wonderfully meditative project to work on. The design incorporates three repeating stitch sections to represent the inhale, hold, and exhale of your breath. The “inhale” and “exhale” sections become longer as this shawl grows. As you knit this piece, you should be reminded to always go back to your breath when life becomes overwhelming or even if you just need to take a break and recenter yourself before you go about your day.

Inhale, hold, exhale... repeat.

  • Gauge is not critical for this project, but it will impact the total yardage used and overall size of your finished piece. See previous page for special gauge swatch instructions. You will have enough yarn to complete your project without unraveling your gauge swatch.
  • The multicolor version of this pattern was made with our Limited Edition Sugar Fluff Fingering yarn in colors A) Honeyed Blossom, B) Lollipop Lane, and C) Cinnamon Glaze. These colors have since sold out.
  • Alternate two skeins as you knit to avoid any noticeable demarcation lines that sometimes result from the natural variation in hand-dyed yarn, even within the same color. It is recommended to start alternating on R10 (WS).
  • All slipped stitches are slipped knitwise.
  • Once you start alternating skeins, be aware that the first slipped stitch on the WS rows is going to be loose until you pick up that strand of yarn again to work with it. When you do so, you should gently tug the yarn to pick up the slack, taking care not to over-tighten that stitch.
  • If you are new to lace knitting, it is highly recommended to use a lifeline in the larger lace sections.
