Shown in colors – Short Version: Brocade; Long Version: Frosted Freesia

360 yds (2 skeins) were used in the short version. 500 yds (3 skeins) were used in the long version.

If those colors aren’t available, any from this category will work.

NEEDLES: 

US size 8 (5 mm) straight or 16” circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge.

Adjust needle size to obtain an accurate gauge.

Intermediate: This pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include: making a provisional cast on, slipping and passing more than one stitch, knitting and purling into the back of a stitch, knitting cables, and the Kitchener Stitch.

Notes From the Designer:

Also known as Prairie Ghosts, Speed Goats, and Goat-a-Lopes, Pronghorn Antelopes are so prevalent in Wyoming that they actually outnumber the people who live here. A ubiquitous feature of the West, Lewis and Clark even described the pronghorns they encountered during their western expeditions. “Of all the animals we have seen, the antelope seems to possess the most wonderful fleetness. Shy and timorous, they generally repose only on the ridges, which command a view of all the approaches of an enemy.” Regardless of how long I've lived in Wyoming, I am still delighted whenever I see a herd of pronghorns running across the plains or even through town. 

 The pronghorn’s unique, curving antlers are evoked in the large horn cable that runs through the center of the Prairie Ghost cowl. Prairie Ghost is a cable and lace cowl that is knitted flat using a provisional cast on, which allows for the design to run around the cowl, rather than from top to bottom. The pattern is composed of a 12-row repeating sequence that features a horn cable in the center, as well as braided cables and lace panels on both sides. The pattern includes instructions for both a short and a long version, so you can customize the cowl based on your personal preferences. Full instructions for completing a provisional cast on and the Kitchener stitch seaming are included, as well as a chart.

• At the end of the pattern, you’ll find a chart for the 12-row repeating sequence. Finally, be sure to check your gauge against mine to ensure that you have enough yarn to complete the pattern.
• Because hand-dyed yarn can show natural variations in color and tone, you may wish to alternate your skeins every two rows to ensure an even blend of color and tone between skeins. This is especially true in this pattern because you'll seam the first and last rows together, and you don't want a distinct color shift to occur.
