Notes from the Designer:

With alternating sections of linen and pebble stitches, Plibben is a simple pattern that yields a stunning result. The generously-sized shawl shifts from beginning to end, reducing the number of rows of linen stitches while then increasing the rows of pebble stitches for a satisfying fade between the two stitches. The linen stitch provides a dense fabric, while the pebble stitch has a luxurious squish, and they complement each other perfectly. 

• Linen Stitch is a two-row repeat where the stitches are stacked in opposites, which is to say if you slipped the stitch in the previous row, then work the stitch in the current row and vice versa. Therefore, every row of Linen Stitch will be determined by the previous row.
• On the Linen Stitch increase rows, every RS will begin with a kfb. The next stitch will be determined by what the previous row’s stitch is. If it’s a slipped stitch, then you will knit. If it’s knit, you will slwyif.
• On the Linen Stitch decrease rows, every RS will begin with a sk2p double decrease stitch. Then the next stitch will be determined by what the previous row’s stitch is.
• Every Linen Stitch WS will be worked the same way. If the last stitch is slipped, wrap the yarn around the outside of the stitch, and then purl. (This is how it should work out, but if things get weird, don’t stress. Just follow the next set of instructions.) If the last stitch is purled, then slwyib immediately, and then purl as usual.
• The Pebble Stitch will have a looser gauge and feel than the Linen Stitch. The Pebble Stitch sections will end up a little wider. Do not decrease needle size to compensate. The difference between the two stitches is intentional.
