- Ah, August! Summer’s last stand. Despite the shortening days, it is the culmination of steadily building heat, like we are under a magnifying glass and teetering on the edge of combustion.  Vines are fit to crack under the weight of fruits ready to be plucked, cicadas fill the air with their cacophonous buzzing, and the coneflowers seem ready to tip on their long stalks. It should all be too much for the senses, but somehow it is just enough, a reminder to take in all the excess of summer before it ends.
