Notes from the Designer:
Passage is a light, flowing shawl inspired by doors, thresholds, and the quiet moment when one space becomes another. The shawl’s open lace center invites the eye to wander and is framed by Jacob’s Ladder cables that rise like architectural columns along the edges. Midway through the shawl, the inner cables separate, travel inward, and cross before returning to the borders — forming twin gothic arches that meet at the center. Beginning in tranquil blues and teals, the hues deepen through honeyed golds and burnished reds before settling into a moody, contemplative purple, like stepping from open air through torchlit arches into the hush of an inner hall. The drape is fluid and airy and shifts gently with movement. Approachable for adventurous beginners yet layered with thoughtful detail, Passage balances openness and structure. Each stitch marks a crossing, an invitation to step forward.

- The sample shown used approximately 1,550 yds / 1,417 m total: Colors A - H: 170 yds / 155.5 m each and Color I: 190 yds / 174 m.
- Turning Stitches: RS rows begin with a csdc for a clean edge. You may substitute ch 3 or your preferred method for raising to dc height if desired.
- Construction Options:
- Adventurous Beginner Version: After completing the Set-Up Rows, continue working the established pattern repeat with color changes as charted. Omit the Moment of Meaning section, and work pattern repeat through the center of the shawl.
- Intermediate Version: Follow the pattern as written. In the center third of the shawl, the inner cables separate from the borders, cross the shawl, and rejoin on the opposite side. This transition is labeled as the Moment of Meaning. Line-by-line instructions are provided for this section.
- Jacob’s Ladder: JLdc lps hang freely and are left unjoined until near the end of the project. All JLdc are worked with a ch-9 unless otherwise noted in the pattern as JLdc(ch13).
- Working into JLdc on WS Rows: Push the JLdc lp to the RS, and work into the top of the dc. Gently separate the ch lp to locate the stitch.
- Color Changes: Drop and pick up colors as needed for transitions. Do not cut yarn unless instructed. Always change/join colors on the final yo of the last sc of a WS row.
- Reference the Color Table on page 15 for color changes.
- Stitch Placement: Unless otherwise specified, all stitches are worked into the next stitch. When a stitch is worked into a chain space, this will be explicitly stated (e.g., "sc in ch-3 sp"). When a stitch is skipped, this will also be explicitly stated (e.g., "sk 1").
- Front Post Stitches: All front post stitches are worked around the post of the indicated stitch, naturally passing over the stitch on the working row. Where 1 FP stitch appears, skip 1 stitch on the working row; where 2 consecutive FP stitches appear, skip 2 stitches. These skips are not noted separately in the pattern rows.
