SKILL LEVEL:

Intermediate - For knitters who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include knit, purl, Long-Tail Cast On, Knitted Bind Off, cables, reading a chart, and blocking.

 Notes from the Designer:

The Oscillation shawl is inspired by the ebb and flow of riptides. The water coming into the riptide from different angles is shown in the braided cable columns, and the central column shows the direction of the riptide's center.

The Oscillation pattern includes five size options for the width and two size options for the length. Both the width and length are easily adjustable by working more or fewer repeats of each pattern. The lengths are designated by numbers (1, 2), and the widths are designated by traditional sizes [XS, S (M, L) XL]. The shawl is worked flat from one end to the other, and the bind off is a simple knitted bind off.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a video tutorial on how to work the cables and read the charts that are featured in this pattern.
  • Yarn is held double throughout.
  • Row instructions are charted only.
  • The sample shown is a size Medium in Length 1 and is modeled on a 34” (86 cm) bust. The sample used approximately 2170 yds (1985 m) total.
  • Before starting, read through the pattern, and highlight all instructions for your chosen size/ measurements.
  • The shawl chart is split in half: Chart A and Chart B. Chart A is used before the central stitch marker, and Chart B is used after the stitch marker. You can add stitch markers to distinguish the pattern repeats if you wish, but make sure the central marker is distinct.
  • To achieve the final blocked measurements, you may need to stretch/shape the shawl more/less when blocking.
