Intermediate: This pattern is for those who feel comfortable with crocheting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include changing colors, working linen stitch, following alternate directions, and blocking techniques.

Notes from the Designer:

With alternating sections of linen and nubby stitches, Nubben is a simple pattern that yields a stunning result. The moderately-sized shawl shifts from beginning to end, reducing the number of rows of linen stitches while then increasing the rows of nubby stitches for a satisfying fade between the two stitches. The linen stitch provides a solid fabric, while the nubby stitch has a luxurious texture, and they complement each other perfectly.

• The sample shown used approximately 2,504 yds/2,290 m total: Colors A - D and F: 437 yds/400 m each and Color E: 319 yds/292 m.
• This pattern is designed to use all (or most) of all the skeins. The color changes are determined by the weight of yarn that remains in each skein. Therefore, the instructions do not include a specific row on which to change colors, since each crocheter’s tension will vary. Choose the color you want for the stripe pattern, and this will be Color F. (Our sample used the lightest tan). Then, select the order for the rest of the yarn colors.
• If you wish to make a smaller shawl, begin as written to Row 8. Then, immediately skip to Block 2 or 3 and continue, disregarding given stitch counts. Change colors every block or so to use all five colors.
• This pattern uses crochet shorthand. Therefore, 2sc means to work 2 sc in one stitch, and sc 2 means to work 1 sc per stitch for 2 stitches.
• Stitches in { } are to be worked into the same stitch without skipping a stitch after.
