Gauge is crucial to making this pattern, so please select a needle size that gives you the correct gauge.

SKILL LEVEL:

Intermediate: This pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include increases, decreases, small-circumference knitting, picking up stitches, working two stitch patterns simultaneously (front and back), Kitchener stitch seaming, and changing colors.

Notes from the Designer:

While designing these socks, I found myself drawn to the quiet beauty of the old buildings around my city. The ancient columns, the delicate latticework on the windows, they all held a story. I took those little details, the curves and the patterns, and knit them into every stitch.

What I love most is how these socks feel like a little piece of the city – elegant enough to wear while wandering its streets, yet cozy enough for quiet moments at home. They’re a soft reminder that inspiration is everywhere, even in the walls we pass by every day.

  • Socks can be worked in a single color or can be made with a main color (MC) and coordinating color (CC). If you choose to use only one color, you may need two skeins for the largest size.
  • This pattern is written for any method of knitting in the round. I advise breaking the top and back stitches as shown in Round 1 of the Cuff instructions. This ensures you will not have to move stitches when decreasing and will help to hide laddering. If working on DPNs, you can break each of those two portions again as desired.
  • The socks are worked from the cuff down.
  • Be sure to measure your gauge in the round.
  • Stitches are not broken evenly in half. Where applicable, totals are shown as front/back.
  • Each k3b adds two stitches. These extra stitches are knitted individually as k3 in the following row and then decreased as a cdd in the row after that.
  • All slipped stitches in the round are done purlwise with yarn in back, unless otherwise stated. When transitioning after a marker, be sure to move the yarn to the back before slipping the stitch.
  • Unless otherwise noted as part of a decrease, all slipped stitches are done so purlwise with yarn to the WS.
  • To increase/decrease height of leg or length of foot, add/remove repetitions of Rounds 1-10 in that section.
  • To increase/decrease width, add/remove multiples of 4 to the cast-on, and break those stitches evenly between front and back. For every 4 added/removed stitches, increase/decrease the number of (k1, p1) or (p1, k1) repeats within each row by 1 on both the front and back. You will also need to alter the number of decrease rows for the gusset and toe sections accordingly and re-center the heel turn.
  • There are different instructions for the R and L sock at the beginning of the toe decreases. Each will have less slant on the side of the big toe and a greater slant on the opposite side.
  • Pay close attention when decreasing. It is very important to maintain the ssk, ssp, and k2tog exactly where instructed.
