50" wide x 30" long

MATERIALS:

Expression Fiber Arts Luster Sport Yarn

Shown in colors: Lilo Hues

The sample shown used approximately 2,225 yds (Color A: 360 yds, Color B: 395 yds, Color C: 390 yds, Color D: 390 yds, Color E: 390 yds, Color F: 300 yds).

Note the yardages are very close, if your gauge varies, consider going down a needle size, doing fewer repeats between colors, or purchasing an extra skein.

If those colors aren't available, any from this category will work.

Needle:

US 5 (3.75 mm) 24” circular needles, or size needed to accommodate sts.

Any size that is appropriate for the yarn selected. Refer to the tag/label for the recommended sizes.

SKILL LEVEL:

Adventurous Beginner: For those knitters who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations. Stitches include: garter stitch borders, combining knit and purl stitches, and changing colors at the end of a row.

Errata: The cast on has been updated to multiples of 3 + 7.

Notes From the Designer:

Knit, purl, and occasionally change colors at the end of a row—no increases, one lone decrease, no lace—just simple texture from a four-row pattern repeat using a six-color kit designed to fade effortlessly from light gray to terrific teal. This seamless cape is one size fits most, although length and shoulder drape may alter in appearance based on individual frames.

While researching the name for this flowing garment, I discovered The Mistmantle Chronicles by M. I. McAllister, a series of children's stories featuring a cape-wearing, sword-wielding red squirrel. How charming! I guess I know what I'm putting on my reading list next!

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a tutorial on how to work this pattern.
  • If you prefer a closed cape, simply seam together the sides, starting from the bottom edge and leaving ample room for armholes; for a poncho, seam together the front panels, starting from the bottom edge and leaving room for neckline.
  • If you wish to adjust the width of this pattern, cast on in multiples of 3 + 7.
