Notes from the Designer:

Kulumikiza is Chichewa (from Malawi) for “connecting." It means connecting with people, with nature, and with life. This shawl helps me to remember that I'm never alone. Cuddling up in this shawl gives me a warm, protected, and joyful feeling, knowing that I can always reach out to connect with someone. The Interlocking Stitch creates a neutral design that suits everybody. Even though it might look a bit challenging, it is an easy stitch that uses basic crochet stitches, such as chains, single crochets, and double crochets.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a tutorial on how to work the Interlocking Stitch pattern.
  • The sample shown used approximately 2304 yds/2106 m total. Almost all the yardage from every skein was used when making the sample. Please ensure your gauge is the same as the designer’s to ensure you do not run out of yarn.
  • This pattern is worked in rows. Each row ends with a ch1 before turning your work. This ch1 does not count as a stitch. This means your first sc for the next row goes in the first stitch of the row.
  • You can place a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of the row to help see where to place the stitch.
  • The first time you work Row 2, add a stitch marker halfway through to mark the RS of your work.
  • You will need 15 g (approximately 58 yds/53 m) of your working yarn left when starting the color change to be able to finish the color change and the V-stitch border on both sides.
