Notes from the Designer:

Helix is inspired by a traditional quilt block called Snail Trail. The name comes from the genus of land snails whose shells resemble the spiral of the quilt block pattern. The construction of this blanket is similar to that of the quilt block, in that it starts from the center squares and grows outward. With this modular design, only one color is used at a time, making this an easy way to incorporate multiple colors without having to learn any complex colorwork techniques.

  • All odd numbered rows are on the RS.
  • If you are using two Pearlescent Worsted four-skein kits, this blanket will use almost all of the eight skeins. Plan on reusing the swatched yarn for the blanket.
  • Gauge is crucial to this project. Please take the time to make a gauge swatch, and check your gauge often as you work.
  • After a section is complete, do not break the yarn unless you are choosing to change colors. As written, the color will be carried on to the next section that uses this color.
  • When picking up stitches, pick up one stitch per two rows along the vertical edges and approximately three stitches per four rows along the diagonal edges. Stitches are all picked up with the RS facing. The first and last stitch of each section will be the selvage stitch.
  • When making the Section 1 - 4 squares, the working yarn should end up at the outside corners of the larger square being made. This means that when picking up stitches along the squares, the working yarn from the previous section should not be on this same side as the picked up stitches.
  • To make a larger blanket (approximately 69” x 69”), knit or purl the first stitch on each row of Sections 29 - 32 instead of slipping it, and don't bind off. Each triangle of the next four sections (33 - 36) will start with a total of 209 stitches. Follow the structure of Sections 29 - 32 to complete these sections.
