Notes from the Designer:
During a recent RV trip through Missouri, we visited the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home and Museum. I grew up reading the Little House on the Prairie books and watching the TV show, which was filmed in my home town of Simi Valley. The word “hardscrabble” is an appropriate term that describes her life growing up. Evidence of this was displayed throughout the locations. Also displayed was her talent for knitting. One item was a sampler, which inspired this lace shawl. I wanted something with different stitch patterns and colors to create interest. Maybe you’ll learn a new stitch, or find a new favorite? Pay attention to how the same pattern can look different just by changing color. I hope this shawl inspires you just as Laura Ingalls’ sampler inspired me.
- The sample shown used approximately 1,173 yds/1,073 m total: Color A: 183 yds/167 m, Color B: 207 yds/189 m, Color C: 182 yds/166 m, Color D: 208 yds/190 m, Color E: 196 yds/179 m, and Color F: 197 yds/180 m.
- Shawl can be made longer by repeating one or more sections. Continue to follow established pattern for Ribbon Chain Stitches that are worked on both edges.
- Shawl can be made narrower by subtracting one or both of the Ribbon Chain Stitches edgings.
- Because not all the middle sections have the same number of stitch repeats, it is difficult to widen.
- Life lines are strongly recommended.
- The first and last three stitches of each row will always be knit, purl, knit.
- Use additional stitch markers as needed.
- Make sure you pay attention to each section regarding right and wrong side rows.
- Read each section through before starting that section.
- The middle sections will always start and end with p1, k1, p1, except for Row WLS33 in Section 3.

"She was glad that the cosy house, and Pa and Ma and the firelight and the music, were now. They could not be forgotten, she thought, because now is now. It can never be a long time ago.” – Laura Ingalls Wilder, "Little House in the Big Woods"
