Notes from the Designer:
When I first saw the Adventurous Hues Kit and its inspiration photo, I immediately thought of dear Bilbo Baggins, J.R.R. Tolkien’s hobbit who stoutly refused the wizard Gandalf’s initial request because adventures “make you late for dinner.” But Bilbo has a change of heart when the adventuring party leaves without him. In a gadarene rush to catch up, he proclaims that he is “going on an adventure.” I suppose most hobbits are more likely to enjoy quiet evenings at home, perhaps working yarn into something cozy. I hope this shawl captures the gentle homeyness, as well as the indomitable spirit hobbits portray in Tolkien’s stories. Linen stitch showcases the subtleties of hand-dyed yarn in a fabric that resembles weaving. If you’ve never worked linen stitch before, begin your stitching adventure with a garter tab, and work simple increases at the outer edges, center, and two additional spines to create a shape that hugs your shoulders.

- The sample shawl used approximately 1,475 yds / 1,349 m total: Color A 131 yds / 120 m, Color B 229 yds / 209 m, Color C 195 yds / 178 m, Color D 248 yds / 227 m, Color E 307 yds / 281 m, and Color F 365 yds / 334 m.
- Pattern uses six colors, but can be made with more or fewer if preferred.
- Gauge is not crucial to this project, but will affect yardage and size.
- Shawl begins with a Garter Tab Cast-on. You can watch a video on this technique here.
- All slipped stitches are slipped purlwise with the yarn held to RS of the piece overall: for RS rows, slip “with yarn in front,” and for WS rows, slip “with yarn in back.”
- The shawl includes four wedges of linen stitch pattern divided by markers and a stitch or two not following the slipped stitch pattern.
