Notes from the Designer:
For as long as I can remember, my dad and I have shared the love of strawberries together with rhubarb. I have special memories as a young child, enjoying picking fresh strawberries and rhubarb from my mother’s garden and making a delicious pie, sometimes as a special surprise for my dad. With every bite, there was a burst of sweet, tart flavor that was irresistible!
Fraise-Rhubarbe is a rectangular shawl that’s crocheted with beautiful gradients of red, offset by luscious green accents. Each section of red is filled with little spike stitches that represent the cute, little seeds scattered all over a strawberry. The green accents have fun, little nupps for added texture. A delicate border is added for a finished look on the edges.
- Click the Videos tab to watch a video in which a small version of this pattern is made.
- Each of the four Strawberry Sections are crocheted the same, but with a different color.
- Beginning and Ending Border and all Insert Sections are crocheted with the same color.
- When working SC1B stitches, be sure to insert hook only into the top of the single crochet stitch below the slip stitch row, leaving the “braid” of the slip stitch visible on the right side of the piece.
- Nupps are worked on a wrong side row so that the “bumpy” part of the Nupp is exposed on the right side of the piece.
- Work a normal single crochet stitch (not too loose) between each Nupp.
- When working the Spike Stitches, be sure to pull the loop up to the level of the current row. In other words, do not work the Spike Stitch too tightly.
- If you are short on yarn toward the end of any of the Strawberry Sections, you may end the section early and begin the next Insert Section. Just be sure to end on Row 6 or Row 8, and then work one Row 9.
