Notes from the Designer:
Bluebird is a delightful, Fair Isle cowl that is punctuated by delicate beads. It is knitted flat and seamed after blocking and is presented here in two different versions. Both versions use three colors of yarn, as well as two colors of beads. The first version is made with EFA's Sincere Sock yarn and is worked in a smaller circumference to hug your neck. The second version is made with EFA's Crema Sock, which due to its high silk content, will drape beautifully. The Crema Sock version is much longer and can be worn as a long statement piece or wrapped double for when you desire more warmth. Both versions make beautiful pieces for gifting and are a wonderful way to start your Fair Isle journey. With so many options of yarn colors and beads, the creative possibilities are endless!
In legend, the bluebird represents both happiness and contentment. This cowl is sure to bring a smile to your face, both as you work it and then as you wear it during the long winter!
- Version 1 sample shown used approximately 170 yds/155 m total: Color A: 60 yds/55 m, Color B: 40 yds/37 m, and Color C: 70 yds/64 m.
- Version 2 sample shown used approximately 440 yds/402 m total: Color A: 290 yds/265 m, Color B: 30 yds/27 m, and Color C: 120 yds/110 m.
- For Version 1, you will have enough yarn to make two to three cowls, depending on which yarns you use for Colors A, B, and C.
- The cowl is knitted flat and seamed after blocking.
- Be careful to not carry your strands too tightly, especially in Version 2, using Crema Sock. The yarn’s silk content makes it less forgiving to block out any tightly stranded rows. On the Crema Sock version, be sure to "lock" your yarn every couple of stitches when working Chart B.
- In Chart A, the “B” symbol is on the row (Row 4) where the Add Bead stitch is worked. The bead will sit on the stitch directly underneath in Row 3.
- In Chart B, the bead is shown where it will sit (in Row 4). However, add the bead when you work Row 5, as the bead will sit on a Color C stitch.
- Both cowls are a multiple of 8 sts +1 st. If you choose to make your cowl longer or shorter, cast on in a multiple of 8 sts +1 st.
