Notes from the Designer:

Makani is Hawaiian for "wind" or “breeze,” which is perfect for this light and breezy ruana/poncho pattern. The stitches used include chains, single crochets, and double crochets done in repeating sections, making this pattern perfect for a beginner. Both versions are worked lengthwise in two rectangles, which are sewn together, leaving room for the neck.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch me make a mini version of this pattern, and I show you how to seam it.
  • The ruana and the poncho are both made the same, so their yardages are the same. They are just sewn together differently.
  • The pattern is started lengthwise and worked widthwise in two rectangles, which are then sewn together.
  • The foundation chain can be adjusted with multiples of 4 + 1, which will change the length of the garment.
  • The starting chain for each row does not count as a stitch.
  • The single crochets in the lace section are worked into the chains, not around.
