Notes From the Designer:

•This etude focuses on shape. Adding more increases at regular intervals to your typical triangular shawl can create a depth of shape that you might not otherwise see. How you block your shawl can also affect your shape. You can straighten the top edge to create a more standard semi-circle, or you can let the top edge curve to create a shape that hugs your shoulders. Have fun playing with the shaping of this shawl as you knit and block it to find something that you enjoy!

•The border at the bottom edge adds some focal interest to the simple body of your shawl. It is worked with a needle one size larger than the size used for the body to allow the border to open instead of getting scrunched into the body. Work it in a different color than the body for an extra pop or use the same color throughout for a more elegant look.

•The increases in the body are worked with yarn overs to emphasize the multiple increase points and give some openness to the body. You may substitute closed increases if you prefer, to create a shawl that matches your personal preference.

•The musical selection for this piece is a bit unusual, but so is this pattern! Try listening to “Battlestar Sonatica” by Bear McCreary. I love the depth that can be created with one musical instrument, and this piece is a masterclass in piano. I listen to it a lot when I’m knitting or writing patterns; it helps me focus and let part of my mind wander at the same time. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
