SKILL LEVEL:

Adventurous Beginner: For those knitters who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations. Skills include basic increases and combination stitches.

Large projects can seem daunting, especially when they may stretch your skills. Breaking them up into manageable pieces is a great way to approach them. In this Mystery KAL blanket, you will work just one section at a time. Each section uses one color and focuses on one stitch pattern. Some of these will be repeated in later sections. Using this method, all you will need is a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a little perseverance to be successful!

  • This rectangular blanket is worked on the diagonal. You will begin at one corner and end at the opposite corner.
  • If you are using a yarn other than what is called for, be sure that it is mostly natural fibers. You need to be able to block the blanket to get the straightest possible edges. Man-made fibers typically do not block well and will shrink back to the as-knit shape.
  • Sections 1-6 use six unique stitch patterns. The same stitch patterns are used in sections 7-12.
  • Hints for each specific stitch pattern are listed in that section.
  • Slip first knit stitch knitwise, first purl stitch purlwise.
  • Increases only happen on the WS (after R4), adjacent to the knit stitch in the edging.
  • Carry yarn loosely when slipping stitches.
  • To carry yarn B up the side, bring yarn A up from under yarn B. This will lock B into the first stitch made with A.
  • Gauge swatches are IMPERATIVE for each stitch pattern in order to maintain even edges. I used to think that I “always knit on gauge”. However, it finally dawned on me that what I was really assuming is that I knit to the same gauge as the person who designed the pattern. Believe me, that is a bad assumption. Please DO NOT assume that you knit to the same gauge as I do! Yes, it is an extra step, but it also assures you that what you are knitting will produce what you expect. And you won’t need to worry about running out of yarn. If you are substituting yarn, it is especially important to verify that it behaves in the same way as the yarn called for in the pattern.
