The updated version was made with three colors of North DK and is shown here in colors: A) Snow Cover, B) Frost Flowers, and C) Smell of Pine North DK.

The updated version requires two skeins each of colors A–C for all sizes.

Original Version:

The original version used one skein each of discontinued colors: A) Fireside, B) Hibernation, C) Bough, D) Wintering, E) Ice House, and F) Enchanting North DK.

If you want to make the original version in similar colors, please use the Misty Hues Dewy DK Kit.

If those colors aren’t available, any from this category will work.

HOOK:

US size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

SKILL LEVEL:

Adventurous Beginner: This pattern is for those crocheters who are ready to create a simple garment. Skills/concepts include the option of learning foundation single crochet, front post stitches, herringbone double crochet, and working in the round.

Notes from the Designer:

Glacadh (GLAH-kuh) is an Irish word for embrace. This quick-to-stitch shrug hugs your shoulders and wraps your arms in snuggly softness. Worked from side to side, you start by working a ribbed cuff in the round, increasing stitches as you progress up the sleeve. Then you switch to working flat in rows, adding some stripes as you change colors. Once you reach the center back, you do it all again in reverse! Use herringbone double crochet stitch to match the texture shown in the sample. If you prefer, you can substitute traditional double crochet stitches. This shrug is offered in three sizes (XS–M, L–2XL, 3XL–5XL) so that you can choose a wingspan that fits best.

  • Click the Videos tab to learn how to work the special stitches in this shrug.
  • IMPORTANT: This pattern is best printed in color, as it uses different colors throughout to denote directions for different sizes and different versions.
  • The original version used one skein each of discontinued colors: A) Fireside, B) Hibernation, C) Bough, D) Wintering, E) Ice House, and F) Enchanting. If you want to make the original version in similar colors, please use the Misty Hues Dewy DK Kit.
  • In the updated version, we substituted Color A for Color D, Color B for Color E, and Color C for Color F throughout.
  • Rounds are joined rather than worked in a spiral.
  • Pattern is worked from cuff to cuff with no seaming required.
  • To ensure that you have enough yarn to make the shrug, use Color C in updated version or Color F in original version to swatch.
  • See table on page 7 for total yardage for all sizes.

I’m excited to start this. It’s beautiful and practical. Just perfect for me.

Personally I did most of this one, I took it apart because I didn’t care for the huge balloon sleeves, nor the gap under my arm. Which isn’t shown in the pictures, oh the big sleeves are, but bigger you are bigger the sleeves. Very pretty on small people.

Excited to start

Beginner crocheter here... This turned out really cute, even though I messed my row count and made the first sleeve to short (so had to make the same on the other side because I didn't want to frog all of those HDC stitches). I did correct some of it with blocking, but the arms are still short on me. It was a beast to make for me (those Herringbone Double Crochets are a little tricky-not my favorite stitch!!) but it turned out really cute, anyway, and I kinda like that the sleeves don't get in my way if I am using my arms while wearing it. :-) Live and learn!

First wearable crochet project I have attempted in over 35 years. Trying this with yarn I had in my closet. Easy to follow instructions and so far looks beautiful! Easy enough not to frustrate but, interesting enough to stoke those old embers for love of crochet. Can't wait to finish it!

Lovely pattern with lots of visual interest. My only complaint is that gauge is provided after blocking. This is something I need with pre-blocking numbers to ensure I can match it.

A very easy pattern, but has its special combination with colors, so even if you're not an expert, you can make a unique garment. Comfortable when it's not clear wheter it's cold or warm outside, and it doesn't fall off your shoulders!
