Notes from the Designer:

Palimpsest is a richly textured wrap inspired by stories layered one upon another, where nothing is ever truly erased. Panels of moss stitch and gently shifting cables unfold like pages in an ancient manuscript, revealing subtle structural changes across the fabric. Beginning in deep, contemplative purple, the colors gradually rise through embered reds and honeyed golds before softening into tranquil blues and teals, like emerging from shadow into open light. The dense, cozy fabric creates warmth and grounding, giving weight to the evolving design. Cables cross and shift at deliberate intervals, marking moments of transition within the larger whole. Both meditative and architectural, Palimpsest invites you to knit your own layered narrative into every stitch. Wrap yourself in it, and carry the sense of depth, memory, and quiet discovery wherever you go.

  • The sample shown used approximately 1,305 yds / 1,193 m total. Colors A – I: 145 yds / 132.5 m each.
  • Cast On: For Long Tail Cast On, allow approximately 2 yds / 2 m of tail. For 125 sts, this leaves a 5 – 10” / 12.5 – 25.5 cm tail after casting on.
  • Construction Options:
    • Simplified Version: After completing Setup Rows 1–16, work Pattern Repeat Rows 17 – 24, following the Color Changes Table (page 11). Finish with Completion Rows 345 – 360.
    • Intermediate Version: Follow charts and/or instructions as written. Structural panels and cables shift throughout the shawl. Transitions are labeled as Moments of Meaning. Both written instructions and charts are provided.
  • Charts: Pattern repeats are outlined in red.
    • Charts 1 - 3 show the base pattern.
    • Charts 1 and 3 are worked throughout the length of the shawl.
    • Chart 2 is worked through Row 112, and again from Row 249 - End.
    • Chart 2A is worked Rows 113 – 248.
  • Stitch Markers: Bold vertical lines in the charts indicate suggested marker placement after sts 9, 15, 21, 27, 47, 54, 71, 78, 98, 104, 110, and 116, or place as preferred.
  • Carrying Yarn Up the Side: When transitioning between colors, drop the color just used to the back of the work. Turn the work, then pick up the new color from the back and begin working.
  • Carry unused colors loosely up the side of the shawl, taking care not to pull the edge too tight.
